How did you get to participate to EGMO?
The first time I heard the word EGMO I was taking part in my first Stage Senior (one stage in the Italian training program), a long time ago, in 2014: I was just entering the world of Math Olympiads then, in awe of the older girls talking about past competitions and daydreaming about upcoming ones. Being a contestant a couple of years later was a huge satisfaction, one I wanted, strived for and, finally, reached. When you receive the long awaited email from the staff you understand that EGMO is more than a competition. The instructions are clear: in your luggage you should have gym clothes, a swimsuit, and a dress, along with your accessorised pencil case and the Schede Olimpiche. And a great desire for a multifaceted experience.
Do you have any secrets you want to share on getting ready for a maths competition?
My experience in math Olympiads taught me that you can never be 100% ready: by design competitions’ problems are new ones (or better, “not known”), that cannot be completely classified within standard grouping… In short, we are talking about problems that keep you off balance, and a key ingredient is to keep calm, disassemble the problem and use what you know. So you need a lot of training, a lot of grit and team spirit. To try and control our nervousness the evening before writing our papers, our ritual was brainstorming on the topics and meditating (thanks to ITA4-2016 for introducing us to it).

Is there a problem you cannot forget?
A problem I can never forget is problem 4 in 2016: after a somewhat disappointing Day 1, finally a nice geometry problem! With the usual angle-chasing tricks, a crafty idea and two full hours, I managed to write down a solution that would earn me a full score… Only to find out, as soon as I got out, that leader and deputy had solved it in two lines by means of inversion (which had eluded me while sitting the test).
What can you tell us about EGMO, beyond the competition itself?
The actual paper sitting is the bulk of the experience, as well as the uneasiness while waiting for the results to come out, but once you are back home you get to keep much more than that from EGMO: the excitement of having been in a challenging situation, the commitment and passion of everyone who organised the event and allowed so many girls to compete, the chatting with japanese and lithuanian girls, the marvel in realising that in an igloo, with a sombrero and under a burqa people can share the same passions.

Qual è stato il tuo percorso di avvicinamento alle EGMO?
La prima volta che ho sentito parlare delle EGMO è stato al mio primo Stage Senior, nel lontano 2014: appena affacciata all'ambiente olimpico, ammiravo molto le ragazze più grandi, che parlavano delle gare passate e fantasticavano sulle future. Ritrovarmi poi a parteciparci un paio di anni dopo è stata davvero una grande soddisfazione, cercata e voluta e finalmente raggiunta. Quando ti arriva la tanto attesa mail dello staff ti rendi conto che le EGMO non si limitano solo alla gara. Le istruzioni sono chiare: in valigia, oltre all'astuccio accessoriato e le schede olimpiche, devi mettere anche tuta, costume e un vestito elegante. E tanta voglia di vivere un'esperienza poliedrica.

Quali sono i tuoi “segreti” per prepararti ad una gara di matematica?
Le mie esperienze in ambito olimpionico mi hanno insegnato che non si è mai "pronti" a pieno: proprio per costruzione i problemi da risolvere in gara sono problemi nuovi (o meglio "non noti"), non completamente riconducibili a categorie standard... Insomma, sono problemi che ti spiazzano, e il gioco sta molto nel mantenere la calma, smontare il problema e applicarci le proprie conoscenze. Quindi, tanto allenamento, tanta grinta e spirito di gruppo. Per tamponare l'ansia la sera pre-gara, il nostro rituale era brain-storming sulle varie materie, e meditazione (ringraziamo ITA4-2016 per averci iniziato a questo rito).
C’è un problema che ricordi particolarmente bene?
Un problema che ricordo molto bene è il problema 4 del 2016: dopo un Day 1 un po' deludente ecco finalmente un bel problema di geometria! Con i soliti trucchetti di angle-chasing, una soluzione un po' truccosa, e ben due ore di tempo riesco a scrivere il problema che si guadagnerà il full-score... Salvo poi uscire e scoprire che leader e deputy l'avevano risolto in due righe con l'aiuto dell'inversione (che in gara era sfuggita dalla mia mente).
Che ci puoi raccontare sulle EGMO, oltre alla gara vera e propria?
La gara è una parte corposa dell'esperienza, l'ansia per i risultati anche ma, tornati a casa, dell'EGMO rimane molto di più. L'entusiasmo di essersi trovato in un ambiente stimolante, la passione e l'impegno di tutti coloro che hanno organizzato l'evento e permesso a delle ragazze di mettersi in gioco, le chiacchiere scambiate con ragazze giapponesi e lituane... la meraviglia di vedere che anche nell'igloo, con il sombrero e sotto il burqua si possono condividere le stesse passioni.
